He never denied the Serbian massacre. Just the opposite. He went to Srebrenica himself and was horrified.

I have a photo of him there with a background of destruction. He has a person in the book Journey to the Rivers that I translated ask: are you denying the Srebrenica massacre? And then answers no, of course not.

Many people love Sorrow Without Dreams, a moving and thoughtful text written after his mother committed suicide. My friend brian evenson especially likes The Goalie’s Anxiety, and, of course, i’ve named my blog after that book. My personal favorite is Repetition, and, in fact, my friend and co-author Zarko Radakovic and I followed the main character from that novel from Austria into Slovenia (where Handke’s mother’s family is from) and in the process wrote our book Repetitions (punctum books).Like.
